Rules – Must Follow
School Rules
At Indian Public School Howrah, we believe that clear rules and regulations are essential for creating a positive, safe, and productive learning environment. Following school rules helps students develop self-discipline, a sense of responsibility, and the life skills necessary for future success. All students and parents are expected to thoroughly understand and comply with the guidelines below.
General Conduct
Students are expected to demonstrate good manners, respect, and care for everyone in the school community. Courtesy towards staff, visitors, and peers is essential at all times. Every student should greet teachers and guests, respect the authority of the Principal, teachers, non-teaching staff, and student leaders, and always strive to be a positive role model.
Respect for school property and the environment is mandatory. Students must keep the school premises clean, avoid littering, and handle all facilities and equipment responsibly.
Attendance and Punctuality
Regular attendance and punctuality are vital for academic progress and personal growth. Students must maintain a minimum of 90% attendance throughout the academic year. Any absence, even for a single day, must be communicated to the class teacher through the school diary.
Attendance is compulsory on all school days unless leave is granted for medical reasons or in extraordinary circumstances with approval from the Head of School. Students arriving late repeatedly will receive warnings and may face suspension if the behavior persists. All students are expected to attend the full duration of the school term, including co-curricular activities.
If a student needs to leave during school hours for unforeseen reasons, permission must be obtained from the Principal, Coordinator, or Admin. Absence from class, CCA, or other school activities should be supported by a medical certificate or a letter from the parent/guardian. There will be no re-examination or extra time for missed tests or assessments.
Parents are encouraged to plan vacations according to the school calendar. Medical leave for more than two days must be supported by a certificate from a registered medical practitioner.
Discipline and Consequences
When a student does not adhere to school rules, parents will be notified through a letter or diary note and must acknowledge receipt. Confiscated items must be collected by parents from the school office within three days.
For serious infractions, a warning letter will be issued and corrective work or detention may be assigned. Persistent or grave offenses may result in suspension or expulsion, especially if the behavior endangers others, damages the school’s reputation, or involves repeated indiscipline or poor academic progress.
The school does not support any form of corporal punishment. However, students are expected to maintain proper conduct at all times, as explained by teachers both in class and in the school diary.
Misconduct and Inappropriate Behaviour
Certain behaviors are considered misconduct and will result in disciplinary action. These include, but are not limited to:
- Disruptive conduct in the classroom, dining area, bus, assembly, or school events (e.g., shouting, whistling, pushing, threatening).
- Habitual late arrival to school.
- Non-compliance with the dress code, such as untucked shirts, improper socks, fancy jewelry, long nails, makeup, or non-prescribed sweaters and shoes.
- Failure to wear the school ID card or bringing a defaced card.
- Not bringing the school diary daily or causing distractions during lessons.
- Disregarding teacher instructions or using inappropriate language.
- Failure to submit homework or assignments regularly, which may result in grade deductions or being asked to stay back and complete the work.

- Misconduct during school bus journeys, including boarding the wrong bus, damaging the bus, or misbehaving with bus staff or other students.
- Bringing unauthorized electronic devices, fancy watches, or accessories to school.

- Missing classes under false pretenses.
- Not bringing required textbooks, notebooks, or materials for academic or activity classes.
- Regularly missing activity classes or arriving late after activity periods.

Serious and Very Serious Offenses
Actions such as dishonesty, defiance of authority, use of abusive language, skipping lessons or leaving school without permission, truancy, misbehavior in public, cheating in exams, vandalism, theft, bullying, intimidation, fighting, and forgery are considered serious violations.
Disciplinary Actions
Depending on the severity of the offense, disciplinary measures may include:
- Written notification to parents
- Official disciplinary notice
- Convening of the Discipline Committee
- Loss of privileges as decided by the committee
- Isolation or suspension for a specified period
- Payment for repairs of any damage caused to school property
- Withdrawal from classes or expulsion from school
For specific violations, such as misconduct on the school bus, the student may lose access to school transport. The school enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy for bullying and cyber rule violations. Any student found guilty of such actions may be permanently suspended from school’s cyber facilities.
Additional Guidelines
- Students must wear the prescribed school uniform, including blazers and ties during winter, and maintain neat grooming standards. Boys must keep hair trimmed above the collar and forehead, while girls should tie their hair in ponytails or plaits.
- The school almanac and ID card must be brought every day.
- Students are not permitted to wear the school uniform in public places outside school without permission.
- Shouting, whistling, running in corridors, and throwing objects are strictly prohibited.
- Students must not upload photographs of school activities to social media without written permission.
- Any damage to school property, whether intentional or accidental, must be reported immediately. The cost of repairs will be borne by the responsible student or class.
By following these rules, students help maintain the high standards and values of Indian Public School Howrah. We count on every student and parent to uphold these principles and contribute to a safe, respectful, and inspiring school environment.
